Is Amazon Prime worth it? A question many ask.
Amazon Prime is not just about getting stuff delivered for free. From free music to a free video streaming service, Amazon Prime has evolved massively since it was founded in 2007.
It’s true that with the service offering today it has the potential to essentially pay for itself but to do that the services have to be used. With so much on offer, I’m not even sure that existing members know the benefits!
In this guide, we will go through exactly what Amazon Prime is and what you get for the money.
I will also share with you how to exactly set some of these free services up so if you decide to go for Amazon Prime you’re set up with it saving you money rather than costing.
Free Amazon Prime
First things first, before we go on you should know you can try Amazon Prime free for 30 days. This means you have a no-risk trial to find out if Amazon prime is right for you.
Click the link below if you want to set this up now, and pin this page for later so you can read all about what you will get from the trial.
What are the benefits of having Amazon Prime?
There’s quite a lot of benefits that you get with Amazon Prime, a lot that even current members can’t keep up. See the summarised list below and keep scrolling for in-depth detail. I think I have captured them all!
How much does Amazon Prime cost?
As you can see Amazon have 3 main options. If you are not a student or don’t have a EBT/Medicaid then these are you are options to join as a member (see more details on those discounts below).
Paying monthly is more expensive overall versus paying a one-off fee, but it can be easier to manage the smaller costs, and it gives you the option to cancel from month to month if you need the cash for something else.
Can I get a discount on Amazon Prime?
In some circumstances yes, here’s 3 ways you can:
If you are a student or have a student in your house then you should 100% get Amazon prime. Not only do you get a 6 month trial, yes you heard me right 6 months! But after that you also get it half off! Working out at just $5.99 a month. Students can also upgrade to Prime Music unlimited with gives you access to 60 million songs rather than the 2 million included with Prime.
EBT and Medicaid holders
If you are a EBT/Medicaid holder then you can also apply to Amazon to get Prime for 50% off and get the membership for just $5.99.
Share in your household
If you live in a house where you don’t necessary split all of the expenses then you could save with Amazon Prime!
Since you can give all of the benefits to one other house member then you could just split the bill so you both enjoy Amazon Prime for half the cost. Here’s how you do that:
Step 1: Sign up for Amazon Prime free trial here.
Step 2: Go to this page and add your additional house member
Step 3: Both enjoy all of Amazons Primes benefits!
Is Amazon Prime worth it?
Whether or not is worth it is down to you and how much you would benefit from the services on offer. For me, I order from Amazon most months so when I weigh up the cost of delivery then it’s totally worth it.
I also watch some of the programs on Amazon video so when you look at the price difference to having that as a stand-alone service vs full prime its absolutely worth it!
Lets dig a little deeper into the benefits and see if you would save money by actually having Amazon Prime.
Amazon Prime Delivery benefits
Amazon is a bit of a powerhouse when it comes to their delivery offer, and they are evolving all of the time.
As a part of the perks of Prime, you get access to free two-day shipping on over 100 million items and free one-day shipping on more than 10 million items with no minimum purchase.
Without Prime, you’ll get free regular shipping if your order is over $25, but no two-day or one-day perk.
Statistica said that a typical Amazon Prime customer spends $1200 a year with Amazon vs $600 of non-prime.
This could potentially mean that Prime customers are using Amazon for purchases to save money on shipping from other retailers.
Will I use the Shipping perk?
A simple way to know this is by logging into your existing Amazon account if you have one.
How many orders did you place over the last 12 months? How many of those orders were under $25? This will give you a indication of what you could save.
Then, of course, there is the convenience factor. Have you ever forgot to pick up a birthday present? And don’t have time to go to the store?
I have done this a lot and this is where my Amazon Prime benefits came in handy. Depending on where you live you could get same-day delivery! This service is now available in lots of cities across the US. Check on this page if you are one of them.
Other delivery benefits to consider
FREE 2-Hour Grocery Delivery
Just like forgetting to buy gifts, I also forget to buy the odd grocery items.
One of the recent additions to Amazon Prime is that you can get free 2-hour grocery delivery from your local Wholefoods market. There is a minimum order for this one that varies by area.
This is a great benefit if you have a set day off work each week as you can keep adding bits that you need to your order all to be delivered on a day of your choosing.
It’s quite nice they have found a solution to think of convincing and to be a little more sustainable.
If you are into your tech like me then you will think this benefit is pretty cool. If you buy the Amazon Key kit you can actually have your deliveries delivered straight to your garage or home without even being there!
The smart kit allows the delivery driver to let themselves in and close all while you watch on camera.
Beats waiting in for every delivery!
So do you think you will use any of these delivery benefits?
Before we dive into some of the digital benefits of Prime, let’s be honest the main reason you go to Amazon is to shop. A membership wouldn’t be good if it didn’t have some great shopping benefits.
Let’s have a look what’s on offer and if it could save you some cash.
Amazon Prime store card
If you are excepted for this card you can earn 5% cashback on all eligible Amazon purchases, you also get a $10 gift card on signing up. Find out more info here.
There is also exclusive interest-free financing offers on some purchases. The rule with this one is don’t buy things you can’t afford and to truly save money you should pay the card off in full every month. If you do plan to use some of the interest-free offers then make sure you have a solid plan to pay off within the allotted time otherwise it could cost you a lot more than the cashback is worth.
This is a pretty cool system and solves the problem of will this fit. The service is pretty straight forward you can choose upto 8 items of a mix of clothing, jewellery and accessories have it delivered and then pay for what you keep! The ones you don’t want can be sent back at no cost to you. Pretty great service if you shop for clothing a lot. You can see full details of this service here.
Prime day and early access to deals
Who doesn’t love a discount? With Prime you can access to the once a year exclusive event Prime day which has some really cool offers on for 24 hours only for prime members. Then on a daily basis you can access the lighting deals 30 minutes before non members.
This is probably an under utilised benefit that more people should use. If you don’t like the idea of a Amazon credit card then this could be a benefit for you.
If you have the money anyway then this system works by you topping up your Amazon reload card and then Amazon will give you 2% in rewards. Its a great little benefit especially if you do end up spending $1600 a year like Statistica said that’s $32 of the subscription cost right there.
If you are expecting or have toddlers in the home this an another added benefit. Basically you can get up to 20% off diapers and other baby-related items delivered to you on a regular basis by utilising Amazons subscribe and save feature. If you also register for the baby registry service and can get 15% off eligible products.
Ever heard on Amazon Pantry? Its everyday essentials like groceries and household items. As a prime member if you spend over $35 they will deliver to you for free.
Streaming and digital benefits
So far you’ve learned about the delivery and shopping benefits of Amazon but wait there’s more. Amazon Prime also includes a host of steaming and digital benefits which really could be stand alone service offerings on their own. Well some of them are (Prime Video) but if you join Amazon Prime then its all included.
With Amazon video you have access to steam thousands of movies and TV shows all are for free. Amazon have even their own line up of exclusive original content that is been given excellent reviews.
Whilst it doesn’t have the amount of content that Netflix does it still have some pretty amazing TV series like Tom clancy’s Jack Ryan.
Check out the video below to learn more about Amazon Prime Video
You also have the option to add on your favorite channels to your Amazon Video account, channels like HBO and SHOWTIME. This could mean you no longer pay for cable and just use your Amazon account for your TV needs. Adding on these channels costs between $4.99-$14.99 a month.
Enjoy listening to music? Then you should defiantly download the Amazon music app and utilise it in the free trial. With Amazon music you have access to 2 million different songs, lots of different stations with no adverts all for free. Now if you are already paying for Spotify or Apple Music this could save you some money. No Amazon music doesn’t have the same access as the other services but it is free and might be ok for you. Depending on how you use the other services.
Want a better Spotify/Apple music replacement?
If you want access to more than 2 million songs then you do have the option to upgrade to Amazon Music Unlimited. This upgrades song quality and gives you access to tens of millions of songs. It normally costs $9.99/month but with Amazon Prime, you get it for just $7.99/month making it cheaper than other services and thus saving you some cash! If you are interested in finding out more check out this article where I go through Amazon Music.
Are you a PC gamer or have any PC gamers in your household? This could be of value to you if so. With Prime gaming every month you get free games to download and keep forever.
You also get a free subscription to a twitch channel of your choosing which would normally cost $4.99 a month.
Thats a pretty great benefit if you consider services elsewhere cost around $50 a year. Of course this isn’t worth any value unless you will actually use it. If this service does interest you then you can find out more here.
The last digital benefit worth mentioning is Amazon photos. This could genuinely save you a couple of bucks a month on your cloud service. Or if you don’t currently subscribe to a cloud service then it could be a lifesaver.
Amazon photos allows you to upload unlimited photo storage so all of your photos are backed up incase you ever loose your device. I used to work in electrical retailer so I know how heartbreaking it is to loose treasured memories and how often it happens. With this service you would be covered.
once uploaded you can choose to keep them there, share any pictures with friends via a secure link or print them off using Amazons print service.
The software is available for you PC and phone, you can find out more here.
For the final part of the benefits we go back to Amazon roots as a online book retailer. Of course Amazon wouldn’t be Amazon if they didn’t offer some reading benefits as part of the Amazon prime package. Do you often find yourself curling up with a book? These benefits could also save you some money.
With Prime Reading you get access on any device to more than a thousand eBooks, popular magazines, comics and books with Audible narrative. So you can pretty much use in all scenarios. Whilst you don’t have access to all books the selection is pretty good. For children you even have access to Harry Potter books. If you like to read this is a money saver and can be shared with the family.
Amazon First Reads
If you spend a lot on new release books you might enjoy this perk. Every month the editors will peak new releases that you can get early access too and for one of them you can buy at a reduced price on the Kindle for $1.99, saving you on average $3.00.
Prime Print Magazines
If you normally buy magazines in a printed format then this is a great saver for you. With Prime print magazines you can receive a 4 month print subscription for just $0.99 thats a massive saving on magazines like Mens Health or Marie Claire.
Don’t forget to share the benefits
Hopefully, by now, you can see that Amazon Prime has something to offer for everyone in your household. To get the full value of the service it is really important to share it! My final tip is to make sure you set up an Amazon Household.
https://amzn.to/33Pp43wIts really easy to and free. This means that all of your benefits are shared with your family. You can add another adult to your Household and up to four teen and four child profiles. First, create your Household. Then, both adults in your household get access to free Prime delivery and all of the other benefits listed in this article.
Children can access digital content their parents have approved on their device but are not enabled to shop. Teens, however, can shop and get orders approved by their parents, as well as access certain Prime benefits.
So is Amazon Prime is worth it?
Still, wondering is Amazon Prime worth it? JP Morgan actually estimated Amazon Prime should cost $785 annually, I’m not sure this would be a good business model and Amazon, of course, know they benefit from having you as a member. But it does highlight the value of the services that are on offer.
The beauty of Amazon Prime is that you can join on a free trial.
So the best way to find out if the service is worth it is to simply give it a try. Remember to set a reminder on your phone for the end of the 30-day trial this will remind you to evaluate if you have used the service and reaped the rewards. It will also remind you to cancel it if you haven’t used any of the benefits.
How to cancel Amazon Prime
If you decide after your trial you haven’t used the benefits of Amazon Prime and want to cancel then you can.
Log into your account, go to Your Prime Membership and choose “end membership” then follow the instructions on the screen.
You won’t then get charged again.
Even once you’ve cancelled your membership, you’re able to restart it back up any other time you need to. You just won’t be eligible for the free trial in the future.
When you add up all of the benefits of Amazon Prime it really is an awesome service for the cost! With that being said value is in the eye of the beholder. Hopefully, you can see that there is a reason they charge $119 for the year as it is a lot more than just a delivery service.
