Why is it important to have a good Cockapoo brush?

best cockapoo brush

Cockapoos are attractive dogs because of their great coats. They have many benefits one of which being that they don’t shed.

But having a coat that doesn’t shed doesn’t mean they are not high maintenance. A Cockapoo coat that is not looked after properly can cause serious matting problems. This is due to the complexity of their coats, being half Cocker spaniel and half poodle. The Poodle part is thick and curly.

When purchasing a brush it is important to note these factors. You need a brush that meets the complexity of their coat and one that helps it stay healthy.

There are so many different types of brushes I am confused

Yes, I am with you, when I started looking for brushes for Milo I must have bought 5-6 different types of brushes to find one that worked for him. It’s the reason I wrote this article to hopefully save you spending unnecessary money. As this is a complete guide I wanted to take you through what options are available and why I will recommend the products I do.

Bristle Brushes

These vary according to the spacing between the bristles and the length of the bristles. Dogs with long coats tend to need widely-spaced, long bristles. Dogs with short coats need bristles that are closer together and shorter. A dog with coarse hair needs stiffer bristles while a dog with soft hair needs softer bristles. If your Cockapoo has a curly coat you may not need a regular bristle brush. He may only need a pin brush for grooming and a slicker brush after baths and to cope with any small mats. However, dogs with fleecy or wavy coats may need this kind of brush. You can also use these brushes on Cockapoo puppies. Now if you have a puppy the brush i recommend has bristles (the one I had for Milo) this should last into adulthood no problem.

Slicker Brushes

This is a common brush recommended for a Cockerpoo by Cockapoo Owners UK and Cockerpoo GB. They have many fine, tiny wire pins set in a cushion bed. These brushes are especially helpful when removing small mats and tangles.

They are also good to use after giving a dog a bath. The pins are bendable or flexible. They are very small but you should be careful not to use a slicker over the same place on your dog’s body repeatedly or you could irritate the skin. They are the type of brush that is great for getting underneath the top layer of fur and removing debris or excess fur from underneath. Now Slicker brushes are a minefield in their self as there are so many, I know I bought some and they were not good for my Cockerpoo as they didn’t allow for his wavy hair. The Slicker brush I will recommend is designed for Cockapoo use in mind.

Pin Brushes

Wire pin brushes may or may not have rubber-tipped ends. Most do not. Pin brushes are a good choice for dogs with medium to long coats and dogs with woolly or curly coats. They are a good choice for most Cockapoos. Pin brushes have “pins” that separate the hairs in your dog’s coat. A good pin brush should have a good cushion with pins that are strong and smooth.

The handle should be comfortable for you to hold. When using a pin brush you shouldn’t scrape your dog’s skin with it. The goal is to brush the hair, not the skin. As with bristle brushes, pin brushes come with pins in different lengths and densities. One common problem with pin brushes is that some of them have a tendency for the pins to push into the cushion after you use them a while. You can pull the pins back out to where they are supposed to be but once they become loosened the pin brush become less effective

Metal Comb

Probably the cheapest bit of kit you will ever purchase for your Cockapoo. These combs are rounded and used to keep matts at bay. According to Cotsworld spaniels if you had just a choice of one brush and did this every single day to a Cockapoo this would help a lot.

Other factors to consider when deciding on a Cockapoo brush

Good quality brushes should be well-made and durable. Reading product reviews from groomers and owners who have used the brushes is always helpful. If people report that a brush only lasted a few months, then it’s not worth buying. You should look for in the reviews what breed the owner has for instance if you read a brush is great but the owners all have labradors then the brush is not going to be necessarily good for a Cockapoo.

Good quality brushes should be comfortable on your dog’s skin and coat when used correctly (any brush or grooming product could irritate your dog’s skin if used incorrectly). And it should, ideally, help your dog look good if it’s the right brush for your dog’s coat. Sometimes it does take some trial and error to choose the best brush for your dog. Most professional groomers have drawers of brushes they have bought to try out before finding a few that they use most often. Luckily for you, I have taken out the hard work and I am only recommending brushes that have been tried and tested on Cockapoos.

Cockapoo Care – How often should you brush a Cockapoo?

Cockapoo dog brushing guide

A question I too wanted to know the answer to when I first got Milo.

According to Cockapoo Owners club, Cockapoos ideally need daily at least 2-3 times a week, its a necessity if you have a Cockapoo that has inherited more of the Poodle traits.

To effectively maintain the coat it needs to be a brush that can penetrate through the thick coat to the skin to remove trapped hair and debris. It is painful for them to endure long drawn out de-matting sessions, so keeping on top of their coats helps prevents this.

Not only does grooming them to help their condition of the coat by spreading the natural oils it also gets rid of debris, dead skin, knots and matts which can be uncomfortable for your Cockerpoo. It is also an opportunity to check your dog for fleas and ticks and their general condition. I like grooming because it helps build up a bond between you and your furry friend.

When to brush a Cockapoo

Personally I find brushing in the morning is best because it ensures you stick to a regular schedule and ensures that you get it done before things arise in your day.
Investing in a premium brush will not only make the job easier for you but will make it a calmer more relaxing experience for your cockapoo too. It is also important that you prioritise areas that are prone to matting, above is a infogram to which areas need special attention and definitely need to be brushed regularly.

Regular professional grooming can still be required, it depends if you are willing to learn yourself. Cockapoo’s coats grow quickly and professional groomers will be able to physically cut/sheer the coat down to a more appropriate level. Another reason to keep on top of brushing is that it will save you money if you do use a groomer as they will charge you more if your pup has a lot of matts and it takes them longer to cut.

Best brush for a Cockapoo puppy

Cockapoo puppy brush

Until around 8 months of age, your Cockapoo’s coat is considered a lot easier to maintain. This is because their adult coat is yet to come through.
This is a great opportunity to get your pup used to be brushed on a regular basis. At this point, you do not need a all-purpose brush but a simple brush that gets your pup used to the sensation of being brushed.

Training your puppy on being brushed is very important if not done early on you could have major problems done the line. My Cockapoo, Milo used to hate being brushed. With time he has got better and now lets me brush him just fine, I found watching some training videos helped. Below I have attached the video that helped me with Milo by a well known dog trainer Zac George I also read his book which you can check out here.

So now you now a little more about grooming your Cockapoo puppy lets get on to the recommendation, spoiler alert it won’t break the bank!

Ancol Ergo Double Sided Brush

This is the brush I used with Milo when he was a puppy. Ancol Ergo Double Sided Brush is a multi-purpose tool to simplify grooming. The pin side of the brush features stainless steel pins with rounded edges, to tease out tangles and removes loose hairs while being gentle on your Cockapoos skin.

The bristle side can then be used to smooth the coat. As I mentioned I also think its the best brush to have as a pup as the soft bristle sides help to train and get your pup used to be groomed.

If you click through on the reviews you will see other Cockapoo owners use the same. It achieves nearly a 5 star rating and for the price I can see why.

  • A multi-purpose tool to simplify grooming
  • With bristles and pins to detangle and smooth the coat
  • Perfect for removing loose hair whilst bonding with your pet
  • The pin side of the brush features stainless steel pins with rounded edges
  • The bristle side can then be used to smooth the coat.

What you might also need

When Milo was a pup when brushing I would also combine with puppy scent spray. The reason for this was to limit amount of baths as their skins are sensitive and would make him smell great. The one I used is Animology Puppy Fresh Deodorising Spray. It smells like baby powder, great value for money compared to other sprays (half the price) it is specifically ph balanced for the delicate skins of puppies
